After eating it was time for an early bedtime – tomorrow was going to be a long, cold, and physically draining day. So it goes without saying that as soon as we were all settled and drifting off, I peeked out of the window and caught a glimmer of green in the sky. Experience has taught me that when you see the Aurora Borealis, you don’t waste time dawdling – you never know how long a display may last, and when a tiny glimmer will explode into an all-sky light show. We had made up earlier that if someone spots the aurora he would wake the others, and so I jumped out of bed, pulled my boots and coat over my pajamas, grabbed my camera and tripod and ran out of the house, all the while raising the alarm. … [Read more...] about Chasing Polar Bears In Svalbard: DDF Arctic Adventure Photo DO Trip Notes, Part 2

On trips less than about 15 hours, I just freeze food a few days before the trip and the food arrives frozen. But on longer trips, on trips when there can be weather that cancels a flight, or when the connections times are very tight or very long I pack my items in a Polar Bear suitcase. … [Read more...] about Polar Bear 48 Cooler/Suitcase For $79.95 Shipped From Amazon; The Ultimate Kosher Travel Tool
Note by whYME: Among the mountain of food and gear Moishie lugged along, was one thing you wouldn’t expect on a photography adventure trip to the far north: a shtreimel. Aside from Moishies usual minhag of taking along a shtreimel on trips over Shabbos, he was not about to pass up the opportunity to likely be the first person ever to wear a shtreimel this far north. In the course of our unpacking, I picked up the shtreimel and joked that I would put it on and be the first one wearing a shtreimel in Svalbard. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone move as fast as Moishie jumping off the couch to snatch the shtreimel from my hands and ensure that he would indeed be the first. I’ve never seen a human shot out of a cannon, but I imagine Moishie launching off that couch is a good approximation 😁. … [Read more...] about DDF Adventure Photo DO Trip Notes Part 2: Svalbard And The High Arctic
“Business class” from Oslo to Tromsø was exactly like coach, except it was at the front of the plane. Never mind extra legroom, SAS doesn’t even block off the middle seat in business class, so the only difference was the free drink and free WiFi. Scratch the free Wi-Fi actually, it didn’t work for more than a few minutes on any of our domestic flights. … [Read more...] about DDF Adventure Photo DO Trip Notes Part 1: Heading For Svalbard And The Far North
Despite having separate bills for everyone from the beginning, it took a very long time for them to run our credit cards. I got to Newark airport just 20 minutes before my flight and pre-check was closed. Usually I’m very good at timing these things, but for the first time in many years I was afraid I might actually miss the flight. Most of the people in line though were going to Tel Aviv and had no problem letting me go ahead of them. … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 4: Tokyo, Japan And Back Home In ANA First Class
Moishe has run some amazing photo workshops across several continents. I traveled on one of his workshops to breathtaking Arctic Norway and Svalbard in 2016, home to the closest commercial airport to the North Pole. We stayed in Longyearbyen, the northernmost city in the world and went snowmobiling into polar bear country, went dogsledding, and experienced the Northern Lights. Truly an unforgettable experience! … [Read more...] about Final Day To Register! Join Me And Over 40 DansDeals Readers On A Once-In-A-Lifetime Kosher Catered Trip To Antarctica!
