-We drove south to Carlsbad to stay at the Park Hyatt Aviara. Carlsbad is about a 90 minute drive from Los Angeles, although having 2 people to use the carpool lanes definitely helped. This property was a Four Seasons until last year when they switched to the Hyatt flag. Although it hasn’t been renovated in some time, the property feels much more grand than the Hyatt Huntington Beach. It doesn’t look anything like the other Park Hyatt properties that I have been to in Melbourne, Paris, Sydney, or Zurich, but then again none of those are resort style properties. All of those properties managed to arrange for fabulous complimentary kosher breakfasts (and even kosher champagne and wine as an amenity!) as a Hyatt Diamond member, but the Park Hyatt Aviara didn’t want to hear of it. Our suite was humungous with a massive living room area, 2 full bathrooms, 2 balconies, etc. There are numerous pools and hot tubs spread throughout the … [Read more...] about Trip Notes: Our SoCal Quasi-Mileage Run…

I thought I’d be smart by driving past the $15 parking garage and opting for street parking a little further away. Alas the street parking had variable pricing and was $3.50/hour for the game, so all I wound up saving was a buck. But hey, a dollar saved is a dollar earned…or something like that. To get from Bangkok to Phuket we booked $50 tickets on Air Asia, a low-cost carrier. Our intra-Thailand flight were the only flights on our trip that weren’t book as part of our AA OneWorld ticket as no Oneworld carries operate any intra-Thailand flights. We also prepaid for 130 pounds of checked luggage which was an extra $30. If you don’t prepay for checked luggage it is something like 10 times that price at the airport, so be sure to prepay! It’s also worth noting that there were less taxes when booking our tickets on Air Asia’s mobile site than their main site…go figure! They actually weighed everyone’s carry-ons at the gate as they only allow 15 pounds per person. It took some arguing but they finally let us through without paying extra at the gate. Their seat pitch is incredible tight at just 29″. I wound up paying the extra $9/per person on our next flight for exit-row seats. They do not … [Read more...] about Round-The-World Trip Notes, Part 1: Khao Lak, Thailand.
Another benefit of the card not reporting on your personal credit report is that when you spend money on personal cards your credit score will be hurt even if you pay your bill on time. A whopping 30% of your credit score is based on credit utilization. You can pay off your card bill before your statement is generated to avoid that, but that takes effort and laying out money well before you have to. Additionally it’s good to have the statement close with a couple dollars to show the card is active and being paid every month. On an business cards from banks like AMEX and Chase it’s just not reported, so you can wait until the money is due without it having a negative effect on your score. That also means if you close the card, it won’t have an effect on your credit score. … [Read more...] about This Is Why You Should Have A Chase Ink Cash Card: Earning 5 Ultimate Rewards Points Per Dollar On Amazon And Everyday Spending
