I waited a bit and then called AJK in his room and asked if he was still interested in trying to salvage Palau. [AJK: Actually, Dan waited precisely 37 minutes after we finished eating dinner, and me telling him not to bother me until the morning so I could get a decent night of sleep and get over this fever, but you see how well Dan follows directions when he gets an idea in his head…] And he said in no uncertain terms that his boss was counting on him being back Friday morning. … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 2: It’s Time To Hop!

My main concern was would the flight take off on time? Even a short delay would mean having to overnight in some dive in Male instead of in an overwater S. Regis Villa as the seaplanes to the island resorts don’t operate in the evening. Our flight was scheduled to arrive in Male at 2:55PM. The hotel informed me that if we arrived after 3:30PM we would have to overnight in Male. … [Read more...] about Maldives Trip Notes Part 2: Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Today we would be flying segments 5 through 8, which were some of the riskiest connections we had on the trip. In Longyearbyen airport I asked the checkin agent if she might be able to move us onto the nonstop flight from Oslo to Bodø, but she said that would not be possible as we had United issued award tickets. I like to always have a contingency plan, so I asked her how many seats were available on that flight and she said that there were only 4 seats left. That meant that if we missed that connection one of us would be left behind overnight in Oslo. … [Read more...] about DDF Adventure Photo DO Trip Notes Part 2: Svalbard And The High Arctic

Despite having separate bills for everyone from the beginning, it took a very long time for them to run our credit cards. I got to Newark airport just 20 minutes before my flight and pre-check was closed. Usually I’m very good at timing these things, but for the first time in many years I was afraid I might actually miss the flight. Most of the people in line though were going to Tel Aviv and had no problem letting me go ahead of them. … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 4: Tokyo, Japan And Back Home In ANA First Class
After getting back into the convertible at about 6pm the skies darkened and the rain started pouring. Clearly this was not our day. [AJK: Though I still don’t understand why we couldn’t jetski from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Sissies.] We did learn something interesting though. As long as you’re driving, you won’t get even a drop of rain on you in the front seats of a convertible. But as soon as we stopped we really got drenched so we stopped to a 7-Eleven to put up the roof. AJK picked up a Reese’s Peanut Butter Bar for himself and some chips for me. There aren’t many times in my life when I’ve felt deprived by only eating cholov yisroel products, but this was one of them 😉 … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 1: Honolulu
