Speaking about sun and the extreme Vitamin D deficiency we likely have, Rafi and I went for a swim on a cloudy Friday morning in the S. Regis pool. We were peacefully enjoying our time when suddenly the sun came out in full glory. Rafi quickly darted out of the pool as fast as his legs would take him screaming, “I NEED SUNSCREEN, I’M GOING TO BURN!” Clearly, it’s been a bit too long since he’s seen that great yellow orb in the sky…I think it’s time to find another warm weather escape before summer makes it’s way to Cleveland. … [Read more...] about Trip Notes: A Quick Weekend Trip To Miami-December 2015
We got to the Park Hyatt and had them freeze the suitcases of frozen food. Our room in the Posades Tower section of the hotel was not ready and the offered to move us to a room in the Palace section of the hotel for $100/night. I asked for a manager as I was surprised that I didn’t receive a suite or at least a standard Palace section room as a Globalist member. In the end they moved us to the Palace room for free. The Posades Tower section of the hotel is more modern, while the Palace section has more of the original character. More importantly for us though given that we would be in the hotel for Shabbos, we moved from a 7th floor Tower room to a 3rd floor Palace room. … [Read more...] about Antarctica Trip Notes Part 1: Buenos Aires+Planning And Positioning For The Adventure Of A Lifetime
The Milky Way is a part of the Rock Islands that is made of a white clay floor. They bring a big bucket of a clay up to the boat for everyone to rub over themselves before jumping into the water to wash it off. I passed on the rub, but AJK went to town with the stuff. [AJK: Seriously, how can you go to the Milky Way and not partake of the Milk? Dan, you’re gonna have to use this as an excuse to go back to Palau. Me? Well, I’m telling Mrs. AJK that she simply *must* travel 25 hours on a plane to experience the Milky Way. I’ll let you know how it goes.] … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 3: Koror, Palau And Jellyfish Lake
Dag Dag had been closed for several months for “renovations.” Now I’m not sure what was renovated, but it’s a homey little restaurant that’s run by a somewhat older couple. The husband is a jokester from the UK and his wife is from Mexico City, and somehow they came to running a fish restaurant in Cancun. … [Read more...] about Winter Break 2015 Trip Notes Part 2: Cancun And The Riviera Maya
The real payoff is taking a 4WD vehicle along unpaved Milolii Ridge Road. The driving will be bumpy and difficult at times and you will lose cell phone coverage but the views at the end are unreal. You can walk along the edge for as long as your nerves will carry you: … [Read more...] about Trip Notes Kauai: Heaven On Earth
Then I asked for her to give us PR-1 status on the upgrade list as displaced business class passengers for the flight to Palau, for which we were currently seated in coach as business class was full. She seemed flabbergasted that I knew their jargon, but insisted that she would have to remove us from our bulkhead seats in order to waitlist us for first class. Which is of course utter nonsense. After some back and forth consisting of me walking her through the process we did get our PR-1 status, though for some reason AJK was listed as #1 despite the fact that he doesn’t have United status and I was listed as #2 with my 1K status. Go figure. … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 2: It’s Time To Hop!
