Vivian, the United checkin agent in Koror, was amused that we wanted duplicate boarding passes, and even more amused when we started telling her about our island hopper adventures. Turns out she was the gate agent as well and we talked about everything from missing the flight to Palau to the reduction in flights from Guam (since that time more Guam flights have been cut). She said she just prays that Smisek doesn’t cut Palau off from the network. With Delta making a play for the Japanase market with twice weekly nonstop service from Tokyo to Koror, the locals were worried what that would mean for United. But Vivian promised to get us out on time and have us make our connection to Tokyo. … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 3: Koror, Palau And Jellyfish Lake

AJK then smartly asked Joseph if he wouldn’t mind changing the Tokyo-Chicago-Newark flight to the Tokyo-JFK nonstop. [AJK: When you get an agent as good as Joseph, you make sure to leave it all out on the floor 😛 ] ANA award space from Tokyo-Chicago is much easier to find then Tokyo-JFK, but as Joseph was rebooking us in a revenue fare class that didn’t matter at all. He happily rebooked us to the JFK flight and booked a connection from Newark-Cleveland for me with enough time to grab dinner in Manhattan along the way. … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 2: It’s Time To Hop!
OK, fine. I do admit that’s an insane amount of travel compacted into just 5 days. Over 20K flown miles! Nor would it come cheap. The first section of the flights to Honolulu set us back 30K Singapore miles in lie-flat business class. The island hopper section from Honolulu all the way until Palau was 100K miles in business class, which was actually a standard award as there wasn’t a single saver business class award on the island hopper on a Monday for the entire year. I can’t remember ever using a standard award previously, but that’s what it took for this trip. And the final section from Palau to Cleveland in ANA First Class would run a whopping 110K miles. … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 1: Honolulu
[AJK: Frankly, it was harder to secure a shower than I thought it would be. Perhaps it’s just me, but I expected that passengers flying First should have priority over those flying Business, but apparently it’s first come, first serve, regardless of class. That said, being assertive worked and I was finally given shower room. Mid-shampoo, when I heard final boarding call for our ANA flight back to New York, I jumped out of the shower and high-tailed it to the gate, which fortunately was only a couple minutes away.] … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 4: Tokyo, Japan And Back Home In ANA First Class

I may be a religious Jew, but that doesn’t mean I’m satisfied limiting my travels to the same boring spots every time, just in order to have kosher restaurants. My most memorable trips aren’t to Miami, LA, or Cancun. They’re the ones to Tasmania, Palau, Svalbard, Dubai, Kobe, Lofoten, Florionopolis, Banff, Iguazu Falls, Kwajalein, Guam, and the Whitsundays Islands. But I also don’t care to live off of Tuna and Peanut Butter. I’ve traveled to those places with double sealed gourmet kosher meals that I have warmed up in hotels, vacation homes, etc. Sure, I have incurable wanderlust vice. But I also love doing mitzvos (good deeds) and davening (praying) in remote parts of the world that have … [Read more...] about Antarctica Trip Notes Part 1: Buenos Aires+Planning And Positioning For The Adventure Of A Lifetime
