It's official. Earlier this week, two major Canadian airlines announced that it will now cost you a little bit more to check a bag. Both Air Canada and WestJet are raising their fees to $30 for the first checked bag (from $25) and $50 for a second bag (from $30). The new rates are already in effect, and the increased fees apply to the lowest fare classes with both airlines. Officially, the new fees apply as of Oct. 1 to domestic flights booked as early as last Friday and all US and international flights booked on or after this Tuesday. The new rates apply to all Air Canada flights departing on or after Oct. 5. All Air Canada economy flex and economy comfort fares still receive a free first checked bag, as do elite members and anyone who books a flight as part of an Air Canada vacations package. Members of the military (with valid ID) qualify for up to three free checked bags. For WestJet flights, these fees are waived for all WestJet Plus passengers, gold and silver rewards … [Read more...] about Air Canada, WestJet Increasing Checked Luggage Fees

A few weeks ago I asked for your tips and got lots of them, so first of all thanks for your help! I incorporated many suggestions from there and the Argentina Master Thread on DDF for trip planning. -My wife and I and our 10 month old son have just arrived home on Wednesday afternoon from a week-long trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina. A city with lots to see, incredible Ice Cream and Dulce de Leche baked goods, and home to one of the best kosher restaurants I’ve ever been to. Here are some of my trip notes:Flight: -I used 125,000 AA miles for my wife’s First Class ticket from Cleveland to Buenos Aires. -For myself I used 4,500 BA miles to go from Cleveland to New York in coach, 75,000 BA miles for JFK to Buenos Aires in first, 75,000 BA miles for Buenos Aires to Miami in first, and 7,500 BA miles for Miami to Cleveland in coach, all on the same flights as my wife. -To book Rafi as a lap child when using AA miles would mean having to pay 10% of the regular $10,000 … [Read more...] about Trip Notes: Buenos Aires, Argentina

Air Canada didn’t collect the fuel surcharge on most of their international flights on Sunday morning, making for some insane bargains in coach and business class to destinations across the globe as I covered in these four posts. The glitch lasted over 4 hours from when I first posted the deal, a surprisingly long amount of time for these types of deals. I predicted on Sunday that Air Canada would honor the tickets despite there no longer being a requirement for them to do so, and indeed, Air Canada’s Twitter team has now confirmed with me that they will be honoring any confirmed tickets that were booked on Sunday without fuel surcharges. You can enter your record locator on AirCanada.com under “My Bookings” to check that your tickets are confirmed. There have been reports of people who booked on various fly-by-night online travel agencies who have been cancelled. The reason for that is that many of those agencies don’t have … [Read more...] about Air Canada Will Honor Sunday’s Tickets Booked Without Fuel Surcharges!
