Rafi had a birthday party in school on Monday morning and the only flight back to Cleveland that night was on Delta. They wanted $480 or 40K miles for the flight, but I was able to redeem 24K Hybrid points via the AMEX Business Platinum for the flight. We didn’t wind up booking a return flight until after we landed in Minneapolis! Once again, miles created an opportunity to create memories that will last a lifetime. … [Read more...] about Trip Notes: A Father & Son Private Jet Ride To Minneapolis
Nerdy day trips
I ordered a shnitzel in a pita for Rafi with no techina/hummos, but they delivered it with the sauce. Rafi wasn’t even going to look at it with the sauce on it so I asked if they could redo it. They said they couldn’t, but they brought it back “wiped off.” … [Read more...] about Trip Notes: A Father & Son 747 Trip To San Francisco
We stayed the first night in the Park Hyatt Melbourne and we instantly fell in love with the hotel. Incredibly it’s just a category 4 hotel, so it costs just 15,000 Hyatt points a night (Sapphire preferred or Ink Bold points transfer to Hyatt 1:1), or you can use the Anniversary or signup nights from the Hyatt credit card. Super-friendly staff, prime location downtown, and a beautiful hotel. There is a Park Club with free food and drinks for diamond members. They upgraded us to a massive suite, which was awesome. There is an enormous swimming pool, the largest I’ve ever seen in a downtown hotel, and there were great exercise facilities as well. … [Read more...] about Round-The-World Trip Notes, Part 3: Melbourne, Australia.
Driving to Polihale feels like driving to the end of civilization. But when you get there you’ll just be in awe at the sheer magnitude and tranquility of this miles and miles long beach with golden sunsets. If you have a 4WD vehicle you can even let some pressure out of your tires and ride up the 100 foot tall sand dunes. … [Read more...] about Trip Notes Kauai: Heaven On Earth
Joseph rebooked us in a full revenue fare class. I gave my United 1K mileage number and wound up with no miles. AJK gave his Aegean mileage number and wound up with tens of thousands of miles. [AJK: 35,000 miles to be exact. Not only that, but this one-way travel earned me Star Alliance Gold for another year, through 2017! Bottom line, if United moves you from an award bucket to a revenue fare due to being bumped, the flight being cancelled or delayed, make sure to switch your frequent flyer number to a partner to be able to earn miles free miles on a free ticket. United will not award them to its own program and you won’t get retroactive credit after the flight.] … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 2: It’s Time To Hop!
OK, fine. I do admit that’s an insane amount of travel compacted into just 5 days. Over 20K flown miles! Nor would it come cheap. The first section of the flights to Honolulu set us back 30K Singapore miles in lie-flat business class. The island hopper section from Honolulu all the way until Palau was 100K miles in business class, which was actually a standard award as there wasn’t a single saver business class award on the island hopper on a Monday for the entire year. I can’t remember ever using a standard award previously, but that’s what it took for this trip. And the final section from Palau to Cleveland in ANA First Class would run a whopping 110K miles. … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 1: Honolulu
