But I’d rather starve than sit in prison, so I declared the food and held my breath. [AJK: If I’m being completely honest, if not humble, it was only after I presented Dan with the possibility of him sitting in an unconditioned cell for the next number of months that he saw reason and decided to just play it safe and declare.] Several agents gathered around and they were perplexed as to why we were traveling with a bag of frozen food. However upon explaining Orthodox Judaism, they were just amazed as to how we had heard of Palau and what brought us there. Explaining Orthodox Judaism was easier than explaining how I discovered Palau thanks to several decades worth of United vouchers that were obtained due to Wendy’s cups that gave Airtran credits, so I went with their main attraction, Jellyfish Lake. And they smiled and said to tell our friends and enjoy our meals! … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 3: Koror, Palau And Jellyfish Lake

Then I asked for her to give us PR-1 status on the upgrade list as displaced business class passengers for the flight to Palau, for which we were currently seated in coach as business class was full. She seemed flabbergasted that I knew their jargon, but insisted that she would have to remove us from our bulkhead seats in order to waitlist us for first class. Which is of course utter nonsense. After some back and forth consisting of me walking her through the process we did get our PR-1 status, though for some reason AJK was listed as #1 despite the fact that he doesn’t have United status and I was listed as #2 with my 1K status. Go figure. … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 2: It’s Time To Hop!
Days before the flight AJK texted me excitedly while I was at a Cavs game with my better half that 2 first class saver award seats opened on a JAL flight from Tokyo to Chicago. The JAL flight would mean a 90 minute connection in Tokyo on a separate ticket on an airline from another alliance. American only charges 62.5K miles in first class from Japan to the USA versus 110K on United, so at first glance it was a no-brainer. However United was also throwing in the flights from Palau to Tokyo at that 110K rate, so that would mean having to shell out 12.5K United miles in coach or 25K miles in business to get to Tokyo. Ultimately we nixed the JAL option as well because we were nervous about misconnecting, wanted to check out Tokyo, and wanted to try out ANA Squares First Class. … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 1: Honolulu
It felt like I had been gone for weeks, it was hard to imagine that the adventure had just began the Sunday beforehand. But it was a trip that I’ll never forget. From the stunning islands in the Pacific to the incredible waters of Palau, this was nothing short of incredible. Even more so that I was able to do it on miles and points. It’s a time intensive and crazy hobby, but it sure beats stamp collecting 😀 … [Read more...] about United Island Hopper Trip Notes Part 4: Tokyo, Japan And Back Home In ANA First Class
We got to the Park Hyatt and had them freeze the suitcases of frozen food. Our room in the Posades Tower section of the hotel was not ready and the offered to move us to a room in the Palace section of the hotel for $100/night. I asked for a manager as I was surprised that I didn’t receive a suite or at least a standard Palace section room as a Globalist member. In the end they moved us to the Palace room for free. The Posades Tower section of the hotel is more modern, while the Palace section has more of the original character. More importantly for us though given that we would be in the hotel for Shabbos, we moved from a 7th floor Tower room to a 3rd floor Palace room. … [Read more...] about Antarctica Trip Notes Part 1: Buenos Aires+Planning And Positioning For The Adventure Of A Lifetime
However United’s website, which replaced the excellent legacy Continental website nearly 2 years ago, is extremely buggy. It also stripped out functionality that used to work. For example while the award calendar has an option to only show nonstop saver award dates, it doesn’t actually work. That critical functionality worked perfectly on the old site, but on the new site you need to manually check each date to see if the nonstop flight has saver award space. Talk about 1 step forward and 2 steps back! … [Read more...] about Advanced Level Mileage Post: All About Expert Mode, How To “Hack” United’s Award Bug, And Get The Space You Were Promised
